Thai classic massage is a type of oriental body therapy based on the treatment of the human body, mind and spirit. It is an intense and deep massage. It is performed in specially designed Thai traditional cotton clothes, without the use of oils. Massage consists of slow, rhythmic compressions along the body’s energy lines, called “sen” in Thai. There are said to be over 70,000 “sen” in the body, and Thai massage focuses on compressing the top 10 sleeps, using the hands, thumbs, elbows and feet to release tension in the body.
The massage therapist also positions the body of the massaged person in yoga-like positions and gently sways the body to open the joints and restore flexibility. Thai massage is performed in four basic positions:
- lying on the back
- lying down alternately on the right and left sides
- lying on the stomach
- in a sitting position
